About Flowergate Old Chapel

Flowergate Old Chapel is a Unitarian church in Whitby, North Yorkshire. It is a Grade II listed building, having received that designation in 1954. Weekly worship ended in late 2025, although the congregation intended to continue holding celebrations for the solstices and equinoxes.

Presbyterians first gathered in a Bridge Street house in 1695. The group relocated to premises near Flowergate in 1715 and later adopted Unitarianism. Reconstructed in 1812, the church retains a cellar dating from the medieval period. Its exterior is red brick, with a rounded entrance containing a glazed fanlight, two arched windows and a smaller window over the door. The interior includes a gallery and substantial wooden fittings, among them the pulpit. Francis Haydn Williams, known for campaigning on social justice, served as minister between 1888 and 1910. The congregation collected nearly £4,000 for essential repairs in 2019.
