About Church of St Hilda
The Church of St Hilda is a Church of England church serving Whitby’s West Cliff neighbourhood in North Yorkshire. Protected at Grade II* since 1996, it is distinguished by its Gothic Revival design and its significant range of historic furnishings and coloured glass.
A provisional iron chapel began welcoming worshippers here in the later 1870s. Robert James Johnson planned the lasting stone building, erected between 1884 and 1886 in a Decorated Gothic style and roofed with tiles. Its cruciform arrangement includes aisles, transepts, a chancel, vestries and a wide central tower. The tower was added to G. E. Charnwood’s plans in 1938. Noteworthy interior details include patterned decoration in the chancel, a timber ceiling with carved bosses, and ornate gilded work around the principal altar. Surviving woodwork includes the early choir seating and communion rail, together with an episcopal chair dating from 1908. A triptych commemorates those lost in war, while Charles Eamer Kempe created most of the stained glass and Harry Harvey designed two windows.
