About Church of St Ninian
The Church of St Ninian in Whitby, North Yorkshire, is a Grade II* listed former place of worship. Once an Anglican chapel serving St Mary’s Church on the East Cliff, it later joined the Anglican Catholic Church following a dispute about women’s ordination. Religious use ended in 2019.
The present church opened in 1778 on Baxtergate, across the road from a medieval predecessor. Local residents financed and owned it as a proprietary chapel, an arrangement unique in Yorkshire. Its altar was unusually not placed at the eastern end. Victorian alterations included the replacement of box pews in 1881–82, reducing capacity from 800 to 600, followed by work to the chancel and apse during the 1890s. The original upper galleries survived these changes. Notable details include interior joinery made by Whitby shipyard workers and three bells acquired from Mears and Stainbank in 1892, which were never installed in a bell tower.
