About Old St Stephen's Church, Fylingdales
Old St Stephen’s Church, Fylingdales stands on a hillside near Whitby in North Yorkshire, with views towards Robin Hood’s Bay. This former Anglican place of worship is no longer used as a parish church. It is listed at Grade I and is cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust. Part of the interior has been adapted to accommodate overnight camping.
Built in 1822 to replace an earlier church, it continued a tradition of Christian worship on the site dating back to medieval times. It closed in 1870 after a new St Stephen’s Church opened near the railway station. The simple Neoclassical building is constructed from sandstone and roofed with purple slate. Its features include a six-bay nave, small sanctuary, south porch, north vestry and western bell-cupola. Original Georgian furnishings survive, including box pews, galleries supported by Doric columns and a three-level pulpit. The church also contains an early 18th-century font and memorials to the Farsyde family.
