About St John the Baptist
St John the Baptist is a Church of England church in the York area of the East Riding of Yorkshire. The present church occupies a former Methodist chapel that was later acquired for Anglican worship and given its current dedication.
A church existed at Acklam during the medieval period. Its replacement, built in 1790, accommodated 250 worshippers and comprised a nave, chancel, southern porch and square tower at the western end. York architects J. B. and W. Atkinson rebuilt it in 1868. After becoming redundant, that building was demolished in 1972, allowing the burial ground to be extended. The present building dates from 1794, when it opened as a Wesleyan Methodist chapel. It is a simple rectangular structure built of stone, roofed with pantiles and lit by pointed windows in the Gothick style, retaining their glazing bars.
