About Church of Saint Mary
The Church of Saint Mary is the Church of England parish church serving Thixendale in the East Riding of Yorkshire. It has held Grade II* listed status since 1966. Before its construction, Anglican worship took place in the village schoolroom, while earlier generations travelled across the Yorkshire Wolds to Wharram Percy for services.
Built from 1868 to 1870 with funding from Tatton Sykes, the church was designed by G. E. Street in the Gothic Revival style and stands on a Bronze Age burial mound. Its stone walls and tiled roof enclose a three-bay nave, south aisle, two-bay chancel, northern porch and vestry, the latter added in 1875. An apsidal baptistry and rose window mark the western end, while a bellcote rises near the nave’s eastern end. Interior features include an 1873 carved timber screen, a stone reredos detailed with green marble, and stained glass by Burlison and Grylls and by Clayton and Bell.
