About The Venerable Bede

The Venerable Bede is a Church of England church in Leavening, East Riding of Yorkshire. It serves as a chapel of ease associated with St John the Baptist’s Church in Acklam. The building is also used by the local Methodist congregation, an arrangement that has continued since its restoration in 2008.

Built in 1850, the church originally housed the village school. After a larger school opened in 1907, it became Leavening’s institute and was sometimes used for extra classroom space. The building was adapted for worship in 1965 and dedicated to Bede. Further work in 2008 repositioned the altar at the south-eastern end, added a north-eastern extension containing an entrance lobby and toilet, and turned the previous sanctuary into a vestry and kitchen. George Pace designed the altar, cross and candlesticks. The interior also contains the modern Leavening Embroidery, which portrays seasonal changes and activities in the village.
