About Church of St Hilda
The Church of St Hilda is a Church of England parish church in Whitby, North Yorkshire, serving Sneaton. It remains the village’s parish church and has held Grade II listed status since 1989.
Sneaton had a place of worship by the 12th century, recorded in 1131 as a dependent chapel of St Mary’s in Whitby. It became a separate parish in 1350. The medieval structure was replaced from 1823 to 1825 by a Gothick church designed by Will Hurst and financed by James Wilson. Built in sandstone and roofed with slate, it comprises a nave, chancel, southern porch and western tower, which rises to an eight-sided lantern and spire. Inside are a square medieval stone font, a wooden screen at the chancel and memorials from the 1830s. Walter Ernest Tower designed the stained glass in the eastern window, while a window added around 2000 portrays Cædmon.
