About Church of Saint John
The Church of Saint John is a Church of England place of worship in Howsham, East Riding of Yorkshire. Recognised for its exceptional architectural interest, the church received Grade I designation in 1966.
Howsham formerly belonged to the ecclesiastical parish centred on Scrayingham. Built between 1859 and 1860, the church was designed by G. E. Street in the Geometrical Gothic style. Its gritstone walls have sandstone detailing beneath a tiled roof. The plan includes an entrance narthex, nave, apsidal chancel, northern vestry and a three-stage north-west tower. An octagonal upper stage carries a spire with small openings, while its bell apertures are divided by columns of grey marble and orange stone. Inside are a richly decorated reredos by Thomas Earp, a painted roof, Clayton and Bell stained glass, and a font and pulpit featuring coloured marble inlay.
