About Church of St Hilda
The Church of St Hilda is a Church of England parish church in Whitby, North Yorkshire. Recognised for its special architectural and historic interest, it has been protected as a Grade II* listed building since 1969.
A church was probably established here during the 12th century, before a complete rebuilding early in the following century. The surviving tower dates from the 15th century, while the nave was reconstructed in 1789. George Fowler Jones rebuilt the chancel in 1848, and Temple Moore directed further restoration in 1903–04, including changes to the arcade and removal of the northern gallery. Built in sandstone beneath Lakeland slate, the church has a four-bay nave, aisles on either side, a chancel, vestry and southern tower. Interior details include a panelled gallery at the west end, 19th-century roofs, Minton floor tiles in the chancel and a medieval grave slab in the porch.
