About Church of Saint Mary, Whitby
The Church of Saint Mary, Whitby is a Church of England parish church on the town’s eastern cliff, near Whitby Abbey and above the Esk estuary. Reached from the lower streets by 199 steps, it continues to serve the local parish and holds Grade I listed status. Its churchyard provided the setting for a scene in Bram Stoker’s *Dracula*.
Founded around 1110, the church retains Norman fabric, although much of its interior reflects alterations made during the late eighteenth century. Its quire has round-arched eastern windows, while the nave comprises five bays. The square, battlemented west tower incorporates work from several periods, including a sixteenth-century parapet. Expansion in 1818 added a northern aisle, followed by new porches in the 1820s. Inside are galleries, eighteenth-century enclosed pews, a three-level pulpit installed in 1778, and memorials including those to Sir Richard Cholmley and Lieutenant-General Peregrine Lascelles. The tower contains eight bells, six cast in 1762 and two added in 1897.
