About Church of St John the Evangelist
The Church of St John the Evangelist is an Anglican place of worship in Whitby, North Yorkshire. It belongs to the Church of England and has held Grade II listed status since 1997, reflecting its architectural and historic importance.
Erected during 1848 and 1849, it was consecrated in 1850. J. B. and W. Atkinson created the design, drawing on Gothic architecture of the thirteenth century. Stone walls and slate roofing enclose a nave, chancel, lateral aisles and transepts, while a compact eight-sided spire rises over the western transept. Hicks and Charlewood planned changes undertaken between 1904 and 1910, including alterations in the chancel and the transfer of side galleries to the northern end. Historic timber fittings include pews, a pulpit, an altar and its rail. The reredos incorporates a mosaic showing the Last Supper, installed in 1904 beneath a gilded fresco.
