About Church of St James the Greater, Lealholm
The Church of St James the Greater stands at Lealholm, near Whitby in North Yorkshire. It is a Church of England place of worship and has held Grade II* listed status since 1969.
Completed in 1902, the church was created to serve as a chapel linked with St Thomas’ Church in Glaisdale. Temple Moore designed it in the Early English manner, using sandstone beneath a tiled clay roof. Its plan includes a nave and chancel of three bays each, alongside a southern porch, northern vestry and slender tower at the west end. The tower is crowned by a projecting battlemented parapet. Within, bare masonry and a curved timber roof accompany pine seating and oak furnishings, including the pulpit, reading stand and choir stalls. A mosaic covers the chancel floor, while carved marble forms the reredos.
