About Church of St Hilda (Roman Catholic)

The Church of St Hilda is a Roman Catholic place of worship in Whitby, North Yorkshire. It has held Grade II listed status since 1997. A presbytery and garden adjoin the church.

Whitby’s earlier Catholic church opened in Walker Street in 1805. The present building, designed by Matthew Ellison Hadfield, replaced it in 1867 and follows a thirteenth-century Gothic style. Constructed in stone beneath slate roofing, it has a combined nave and chancel, slim aisles, an octagonal tower and a matching spire. The Lady Chapel dates from 1890, while the sanctuary received a new ceiling two years later. Consecration followed in September 1925 after the debt had been cleared. Interior details include original timber pews, Minton tiled flooring, a painted wooden rood screen, and a carved reredos with seven canopied sections. A stone altar rests on marble columns, and the former baptistry became the Martyrs’ Chapel in 1987.
