About Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church
Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church is a Roman Catholic church in Whitby, North Yorkshire. The church has held parish status since 1948, having previously belonged to the parish served from St Hedda’s Church at Egton Bridge.
Built in 1932, the church was designed in the Gothic Revival style by local architect W. R. Robinson. Its stone walls are covered by a Welsh slate roof, while the plan comprises a nave, sanctuary and south-facing gabled sacristy. Lancet windows and a cross above the western gable provide characteristic external details. Inside, the restrained furnishings include a pine pulpit and altar beneath a king-post roof. Figures depicted in stained glass appear in the windows, and timber Stations of the Cross are set into recesses in the walls.
