About St. Thomas, Osbaldwick

St. Thomas, Osbaldwick is a Church of England parish church on Osbaldwick Lane in Osbaldwick, a village suburb on York’s eastern side. Within the Diocese of York, it has been protected as a Grade II listed building since 1953.

The limestone building originated in the twelfth century, and its nave, chancel and several round-arched windows remain from that time. A damaged medieval font bowl also survives, although it is no longer used. Later details include sixteenth-century wall panels, Jacobean-era furnishings and glass from several periods. John Oldrid Scott directed substantial repairs in 1877. A major extension designed by A. Michael Mennim followed in 1967, adding the southern transept, porch, vestry and organ room, and creating an L-shaped footprint. The early south entrance was transferred to the transept’s eastern side. Mary Ward, who established the Congregation of Jesus, was laid to rest in the churchyard, and her memorial stone is now set into the south wall.
