York Unitarian Chapel is situated in St Saviourgate, York, North Yorkshire. It remains affiliated with the national association for Unitarian and Free Christian congregations. Its architectural and historic importance is recognised through Grade II* protection.
Dating from no later than 1692, the church has a plan shaped like an equal-armed cross. It may be York’s earliest large structure to rely on brick walls for support. Lady Sarah Hewley, a nonconformist Protestant and the surviving wife of parliamentarian Sir John Hewley, provided significant financial assistance. Charles Wellbeloved later served as minister, remaining in office up to his death in 1858. Among his civic activities were efforts to protect York’s walls, reform conditions at the county asylum and create the city’s Mechanics’ Institute. He also produced a York Minster guide, helped raise funds following fire damage there, and headed Manchester College.
