About Church of Saint Martin
The Church of Saint Martin stands at Wharram Percy, the deserted settlement near Wharram in North Yorkshire. Now a ruin in the care of English Heritage, it is a Grade II* listed building. It ceased to serve as a church in 1971, after worship had continued there for people from Thixendale long after Wharram Percy was abandoned.
A wooden church occupied the site during the later 10th century and was replaced by a stone building around the middle of the 11th century. Surviving fabric includes work from the 12th century, with later medieval alterations and a 15th-century east wall. Built in limestone, the structure comprises a nave, southern porch, chancel and partly collapsed western tower. The porch retains a 13th-century pointed entrance with moulding and carved foliage capitals. Most of the church is open to the sky, although the chancel has a slate covering. The tower fell in 1959, five years after the furnishings were taken away, and limited reroofing was carried out during the 1980s.
