About United Reformed Church
The United Reformed Church stands in Barton-upon-Humber, Lincolnshire. Formerly known as Providence Chapel, it is a Grade II listed building and the earliest Independent chapel still surviving in Lincolnshire. The church closed around 1993.
Built in 1806 with an adjoining manse, the two-storey structure uses locally produced red brick and has a gabled roof covered with Welsh slate and pantiles. Its front includes a round panel bearing the original chapel name and construction date, with the later church name painted above. A flat-topped porch was added between 1859 and 1864. Inside, decorative plasterwork survives alongside an almost complete collection of early box pews, preserving the chapel’s original seating to an unusual degree.
