About Central Methodist Church
Central Methodist Church stands at 123 High Street in the Boultham area of Lincoln, Lincolnshire, near St Peter at Gowts. It remains in use for Methodist worship and community gatherings, and accommodates the Lincoln Community Grocery. The building received Grade II protection in 1999.
Erected in 1905 for Primitive Methodists, the church was initially called Portland Place Methodist Church and was renamed in 1932. Howdill & Sons of Leeds, comprising Thomas Howdill and Charles Barker Howdill, produced the design. Edwardian Baroque features are combined with Arts and Crafts elements, particularly around the towers. The structure is built from brick and dressed limestone, with slate across the main roof and lead covering the towers. Its elaborate High Street elevation is framed by towers of different heights, each crowned by a dome. Behind the chapel were spaces created for a Sunday school, meetings and theatrical use. Interior fittings, among them the pulpit, were modified in 1968.
