About St John
St John is a Church of England parish church on High Street in Lincoln, Lincolnshire. It remains in use for worship and also serves as a community meeting place for local people and visitors. The church has been protected as a Grade II* listed building since 1967.
Dating from about 1170, the present building probably succeeded an older church on the same site. George Gilbert Scott and Henry Goddard oversaw a substantial restoration from 1859 to 1861, including extensive work to renew and reconstruct the exterior. Belgian refugees housed at a nearby manor during the First World War worshipped here and painted the church’s reredos. Its notable stained glass has been attributed as a possible work of Clayton & Bell. The burial ground was enlarged on two occasions, and an entrance with piers and iron gates was added in 1824.
