About Thomas Cooper Memorial Baptist Church
Thomas Cooper Memorial Baptist Church is an active Baptist congregation on Lincoln’s High Street in Lincolnshire. It commemorates Thomas Cooper, a nineteenth-century Chartist, poet and historian, and is also known by several shortened forms of its name.
Lincoln’s first Baptist chapel opened in 1701 in the Cornhill area, close to the River Witham and St Benedict’s Church. It was replaced on its original plot in 1860, then rebuilt once more between 1884 and 1886. Redevelopment of that location in the late 1960s led the trustees to relocate. The present church dates from 1972 and was designed by Frederick Gibberd. Its site had formerly held the Hannah Memorial Wesleyan Chapel, which closed in 1962. A suspected arson incident occurred in 2016, but the fire was contained and caused no serious damage.
