About St Bartholomew's Church, Ruswarp

St Bartholomew's Church, Ruswarp is a former Church of England place of worship in Ruswarp, near Whitby in North Yorkshire. It closed in 2020 after its congregation had declined and received Grade II listed status in 2021. The building was converted into two flats in 2022.

Consecrated in 1869, the church was Charles Noel Armfield’s first independent design and cost £3,052 to build. Its architecture follows a late 13th-century Gothic style, using Grosmont sandstone beneath Welsh slate and terracotta ridge tiles. The plan includes a nave, chancel and apse, south porch, Lady chapel and south-east steeple. The five-stage tower features buttresses, lancet openings, clocks and a stair turret, while its octagonal spire has pinnacles, gabled openings and a weathercock. Robert Thompson designed replacement furnishings in the early 20th century, and a narthex was added in 1990. The fittings were removed during the residential conversion, but the stained glass remains.
