About Church of St Michael

The Church of St Michael is an active Church of England parish church in Driffield, East Riding of Yorkshire. Dating from the medieval period, it continues to hold regular services and is protected as a Grade I listed building.

Built around 1132 for Kirkham Abbey’s prior, the church was altered during the 14th and 15th centuries. Its sandstone ashlar fabric includes a three-level tower, with two lower stages surviving from the 12th century and a Perpendicular upper stage added in the 15th. John Loughborough Pearson substantially rebuilt the deteriorating church between 1855 and 1857. Clayton and Bell created extensive biblical murals in 1865, with Old Testament subjects in the nave and New Testament scenes in the chancel; the firm also supplied stained glass and decorated roofs. The murals were conserved between 1986 and 1991. Romanesque carving and later Cosmati-style paving are among the other notable features.
