About Church of St Thomas
The Church of St Thomas is a Church of England parish church in Whitby, North Yorkshire. It is protected as a Grade II listed building, a designation granted in 1969.
An earlier chapel was erected in 1585 to serve the parish of St Hilda at Danby. The present church replaced it between 1792 and 1794, with the nave and western tower surviving from that work. Alterations carried out from 1876 to 1879 included rebuilding the eastern end. Constructed in sandstone beneath a green slate roof, the church has a combined nave and chancel. Its tower is crowned by a pyramidal roof, ball finial and weather vane, while the bell openings contain paired, gently pointed lights. A sundial dated 1793 stands on the nave’s southern wall, and a stone bearing the year 1585 was retained from the former chapel.
