About St Edward the Confessor, Scarborough
St Edward the Confessor is a Roman Catholic church in the South Cliff area of Scarborough, North Yorkshire. Established as a chapel of ease for the town’s growing suburban population, it became an independent parish in 1968 before returning to chapel-of-ease status in 1999.
Plans developed during the 1890s, although limited funds delayed construction until a York benefactor gave £1,000. Designed by John Petch & Son, the church was built between 1912 and 1914 in a neo-Byzantine style. Its red-brick walls have stone detailing, while pantiles cover the roof. The southwest tower changes from a square base to an octagonal upper section beneath a pyramidal tiled roof. Inside are the original oak seating, a carved stone altar featuring reindeer, a stone reredos and a panelled canopy. A timber gallery stands at the western end.
