About Church of Saint John the Baptist
The Church of Saint John the Baptist is a Church of England parish church in Cayton, Scarborough, North Yorkshire. Dating from the medieval period, it remains the village’s parish church and has held Grade I listed status since 1967.
Originating in the 12th century, the church retains its chancel, northern aisle and sections of the nave from that period. The nave was enlarged during the 15th century, when the western tower and northern chapel were also built. Sandstone walls are covered by Welsh slate roofs, while the three-storey tower features buttresses, pinnacles and a battlemented parapet. The south porch shelters a Norman entrance decorated with chevrons and scalloped capitals. Interior features include a medieval font, a brass inscription from 1452, a 17th-century oak communion table and a tower door dated 1678. A commemorative clock was fitted to the tower in 1947.
