About St Joseph's Church
St Joseph’s Church is a Roman Catholic parish church at 1 Greylands Park Grove in Newby, near Scarborough, North Yorkshire. Completed in 1960 and established as a separate parish, it remains a place of Catholic worship. The church has held Grade II listed status since 2007.
Catholics acquired the Newby site in 1930, but construction was delayed, partly by the Second World War. An adapted British Army structure became a Mass centre in 1949 before the present church was built between 1958 and 1960 to plans by Francis Johnson. Constructed in brown brick, with stone detailing and a pantiled roof, it has a nave, chancel, organ loft, chapels and vestries. The west front features twin staircase towers, statues, obelisks, a Calvary, circular window and bellcote. A further chapel was added in 1970, and the former baptistery became a remembrance chapel in 1993. Original furnishings and handmade glass remain inside.
