About St George
St George is a Roman Catholic place of worship in Eastfield, Scarborough, North Yorkshire. Since 1999, it has operated as a dependent chapel rather than holding separate parish status.
Catholics first gathered for Mass at the local community centre during Eastfield’s development. Designed by Francis Johnson, the present building opened in 1957 and cost £15,000 together with its neighbouring priest’s house. It became an independent parish in 1965, after initially being attached to St Peter’s in Scarborough. Red brick walls and a roof covered with pantiles give the structure a modest, domestic character. Church and hall occupy separate halves, with a retractable partition allowing them to form one larger room. Alterations to the front in the 1980s created a replacement entrance, kitchen and additional practical accommodation. Furnishings include seating formerly used at Houghton Hall chapel, a side chapel, space for an organ, and timber sanctuary pieces dating from the building’s opening.
