About Church of All Saints

The Church of All Saints is the Church of England parish church serving Bishop Burton, near Beverley in the East Riding of Yorkshire. It remains an active place of worship and has been protected at Grade II* since 1968.

A church may have been established here by John of Beverley during the early eighth century. The present stone building, roofed in slate, retains thirteenth-century fabric in its nave and western tower, while the aisles originated in the following century. Much of the tower was reconstructed in 1663, and the aisles were renewed in 1821. John Loughborough Pearson added the chancel and vestry in 1864–65. Interior features include a medieval piscina, a carved figure from the twelfth century and an eighteenth-century font. Memorials include fifteenth- and sixteenth-century brasses, a black marble tablet commemorating Tobias Hodson, and Rachel Gee’s alabaster tomb.
