About Albemarle Baptist Church and attached schoolroom
Albemarle Baptist Church and attached schoolroom is situated in Scarborough town centre, facing the open space of Albemarle Crescent. The complex, designed by Henry Francis Lockwood, has held Grade II status since 1990 and forms part of Scarborough’s designated conservation area.
The congregation originated in 1863, when 41 worshippers established a new fellowship led by the Revd James Lewitt. Completed in 1867, the church was followed the next year by an adjoining school and accommodation for its caretaker. Lockwood adopted Gothic Revival forms, using white brick and dressed masonry enriched with ashlar. The façade features three entrance arches, glazed doors, elaborate window tracery, a tower and an eight-sided masonry spire. Within, iron supports carry the timber roof, and nineteenth-century seating, choir stalls and pulpit survive. The organ, made by Booth of Wakefield in 1870, contains 1,186 pipes and 20 stops. Repairs undertaken between 2006 and 2011 reconstructed the spire’s upper section and restored damaged tracery.
