About Saint John the Evangelist, Ryhall

Saint John the Evangelist, Ryhall is a Church of England church in Ryhall, in the Stamford area of Rutland. Dating from the medieval period, it is recognised for its national architectural and historic importance through its Grade I listed status.

The church originated in the early 1200s and has several carved figures on its exterior. Above the south porch is a parvis, a room intended for use by a priest. Local tradition links the site with St Tibba, who is believed to have lived in Ryhall during the seventh century and to have been buried here. Her relics were moved to Peterborough Abbey in the early eleventh century. Traces of a small hermitage connected with her survive beside the western end of the north aisle. Serious roof leaks led to the building being placed on the Heritage at Risk Register in 2019. Roof repairs were finished in 2022, allowing its removal from the register.
