About Church of St Peter and St Paul
The Church of St Peter and St Paul is a Church of England parish church in Great Casterton, near Stamford in Rutland. Designated Grade I, it shares its benefice with the parishes of Little Casterton, Pickworth and Tickencote.
The church has Norman origins and was first arranged with a nave and two aisles divided by arcades. A curved arch linked the nave and tower, while a further arch opened into the original chancel. During the 13th century, that chancel was replaced and enlarged, with narrow pointed windows incorporated into the new work. The aisle windows were also added, and a clerestory featuring 15th-century Decorated tracery was later constructed over the arcade. The font is from around the end of the 12th century or beginning of the 13th. Former 18th-century box pews have been taken out, and restoration was undertaken during the 20th century. An arched memorial entrance to the churchyard commemorates those who died in the two World Wars. Poet John Clare and Martha “Patty” Turner married here in 1820.
