About Church of St Mary
The Church of St Mary is a Church of England parish church in Stamford, Rutland. Dating from the 12th century, it remains an active place of worship and is protected as a Grade I listed building.
The church has a cruciform layout, unique among Rutland’s churches, with transepts and a central tower. Its tower and 148-foot broach spire are 14th-century work, adorned with figures of the Virgin Mary, Saints Peter and Paul, and the Angel Gabriel. A west doorway dates from about 1190, while the octagonal font is medieval. George Gilbert Scott directed restoration in 1861–62, followed by work on the chancel in 1863. Notable later additions include stained glass by Ninian Comper and an angel-decorated roof designed by Sir Charles Nicholson, completed posthumously in 1950.
