About Church of St Mary
The Church of St Mary is a Church of England church in Stamford, Rutland. It is protected as a Grade II* listed building, recognising its particular architectural and historic importance.
The small building stands among the remains of a castle site, thought to have begun as an early Norman bailey before becoming a fortified manor. The nearby West Glen River can flood the outer moat and, at times, the church and burial ground. Its nave and chancel date from the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. There is no tower, but a bell-cote holds two bells. Above the south entrance is a notable Norman tympanum carved with Christ in Majesty accompanied by angels. The door is generally considered to be twelfth-century, although an Anglo-Saxon origin has also been suggested.
