About Church of St Peter
The Church of St Peter is a Church of England church in Stamford, Rutland. Dating from the middle of the 12th century, it is protected as a Grade I listed building. It has been cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust since 2019 and reopened to visitors in June 2022 following substantial repairs.
Samuel Pepys Cockerell rebuilt much of the church in 1792, funded by Eliza Wingfield, while retaining important Norman work in the chancel. Constructed from local limestone with Collyweston slate roofing, the building includes a three-bay nave, chancel, north transept and a two-storey south tower that also forms the porch. The chancel has six-part stone vaulting and an elaborate rounded arch decorated with carved heads, animals, foliage and geometric patterns. Other features include a Romanesque font, a 14th-century wooden effigy and an altar table dated 1627.
