About Church of St Mary, Felmersham

The Church of St Mary, Felmersham is a Church of England parish church in Bedfordshire, serving Felmersham and Radwell. Standing above the River Great Ouse, it is protected at Grade I and is noted for the survival of much of its medieval fabric.

Built around 1220–1240 as an outlying foundation of Lenton Priory in Nottinghamshire, the church is constructed from limestone rubble with dressed stone details. Its Early English design has a cross-shaped arrangement, with an aisled nave, long chancel, transepts, central tower and southern porch. Alterations during the 14th and 15th centuries included raising the tower, rebuilding the southern aisle wall and inserting new windows. Notable survivals include alternating circular and octagonal nave piers, a double piscina, and a 15th-century oak screen with remnants of painted decoration. The north transept contains an organ dating from 1873, while the east window commemorates local lives lost during the Second World War.
