About St John the Divine
St John the Divine is an Anglican parish church in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire. It belongs to the Wiverton grouping of local parishes and continues in parish use. The church has Grade II protection in recognition of its architectural and historical importance.
Arthur Brewill designed the church, which was erected in 1892 for Robert Millington Knowles, a resident of Colston Bassett Hall who served as Nottinghamshire’s High Sheriff. It took the place of the older St Mary’s, then ruinous and situated beyond the village. Its tower received five bells transferred from the former church, together with equipment allowing them to chime. Heaton, Butler and Bayne made the coloured glazing in the eastern window, while Brewill planned a pulpit combining oak with Cosham Down Bath stone. Faulty early construction led to substantial conservation work from 1934, directed by Charles Marriott Oldrid Scott. Repairs addressed corrosion damage within the spire and failing foundations at the western end, before worship resumed in August 1936.
