About St. Mary the Virgin
St. Mary the Virgin is a Church of England parish church in Welford, Northamptonshire, standing beside Church Lane where it meets West Street. It remains the village’s parish church and forms part of a united benefice with Marston Trussell and Sibbertoft, while retaining its own building. The church is protected as a Grade II* listed building.
Evidence of Christian ministry in Welford reaches back to 1086, when a priest was recorded there, although no church building was specified. The present church dates principally from the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries, with its earliest fabric dating from around 1201. Its plan includes a nave, chancel, two side aisles and a tower at the western end. Edmund Francis Law oversaw restoration work in 1872, including reconstruction of the north aisle. Historic memorials survive within the church and its old burial ground, where two late 17th-century headstones are separately listed at Grade II.
