About St Michael's
St Michael’s is an active Church of England parish church on Main Street in Newark, Nottinghamshire. The church is protected as a Grade II listed building, recognising its architectural and historic interest. It continues in its established role as the local Anglican parish church.
The site has origins in the fifteenth century, although fire led to the building being reconstructed in 1859–60. The work was undertaken by architects Thomas Chambers Hine and Robert Evans, with 1860 recorded as the year of completion. Little remains from the medieval structure apart from part of its tower, which was retained within the later church. The organ was made by James Jepson Binns, an English organ builder whose instrument forms another notable element of the interior.
