About Holy Cross Priory, Leicester
Holy Cross Priory, Leicester is an active Roman Catholic parish on New Walk in Leicester. It is also a house of the Dominican Order, whose members are known as Friars Preachers and Blackfriars. The community’s work includes preaching in Woodhouse and serving both Leicester universities and the city’s royal infirmary.
Dominican life in Leicester began in 1247, when a religious house was founded near St Clement’s Church beside the old city boundary. Henry VIII closed it in 1538, and the friars did not return until 1819. The present religious house dates from 1882. When its place of worship became inadequate, Vincent McNabb launched an appeal for a larger building in 1929. Its chancel and cross-arms were ready in 1931, but completion and dedication followed in 1958. The current instrument was made by William Ebenezer Richardson in 1880 and later brought from a Preston church.
