About Church of the Annunciation of Our Lady of the Newarke
The Church of the Annunciation of Our Lady of the Newarke was a medieval collegiate church in Leicester, Leicestershire. It is no longer an active place of worship, having been demolished in the 16th century. Two original arches remain beneath De Montfort University’s Hawthorn Building and can be viewed in the university heritage centre.
Henry of Grosmont, Duke of Lancaster, founded the church in 1353 as part of an enlargement of his father’s hospital near Leicester Castle. It housed a fragment believed to come from Christ’s crown of thorns, presented to Henry by the French king John II, and consequently attracted pilgrims. The church also served as a burial place for members of the Lancastrian family, including Henry’s father, Henry himself, Constance of Castile and Mary de Bohun. Richard III’s body was probably displayed there following the Battle of Bosworth. Shortly before the church was destroyed during the suppression of chantries, John Leland recorded its modest size and notable beauty.
