About St Nicholas's

St Nicholas's is the Church of England parish church for Bransdale, in York, North Yorkshire. It remains the village’s parish church and has held Grade II listed status since 1987.

A place of worship stood in Bransdale during the 1200s and was probably associated with Keldholme Priory. The present stone building was erected around 1800 and is stylistically attributed to John Smith of Farndale. Its roof was renewed in 1886, followed by an extension in 1934. The nave and chancel share one continuous stone-flagged roof, while the south porch has slate covering and a rounded arch beneath its gable. At the western end is a single-stage battlemented tower with a louvred opening for the bell. Paired, cusped lights appear in the side windows, and the east window has three lights. Interior features include a relocated sedilia, a tub-shaped font and a barrel-vaulted ceiling.
