About All Saints
All Saints is an active Church of England parish church on Market Place in York, North Yorkshire. Dedicated to all the saints, the church belongs to a shared benefice with congregations at Sproxton, Rievaulx and East Moors. It was designated a Grade II* listed building in January 1955 and has a congregation of about 70 people.
Christian worship on the site predates the Norman Conquest, and a church was documented there in 1086. The present building retains two rounded Norman arches from the 12th century, alongside a western tower of three stages, a four-bay nave, transepts and a two-bay chancel. Built from dressed sandstone beneath a steep stone-slate roof, it was extensively reconstructed in the Gothic Revival manner between 1866 and 1869. This work preserved some earlier fabric and introduced stained glass made by Hardman & Co. A Harrison & Harrison pipe organ, installed in 1931 using some older pipework, remains in use during worship.
