About St Mary

St Mary is the Church of England parish church serving Askham Richard, in the rural western area of York, North Yorkshire. Standing on School Lane, it remains an active place of worship and is protected as a Grade II* listed building.

The church largely dates from the 12th century and is built of limestone and sandstone. Its surviving south wall contains three windows, an entrance and a buttress. A porch added in 1879 shelters a Norman doorway decorated with zigzag carving and leaf details. During the 19th century, the northern wall was reconstructed, the western gable repaired and a vestry created. An earlier Saxon entrance was also rebuilt from masonry discovered within the north wall. The roof carries a bell turret, while the interior has a continuous nave and chancel. Notable fittings include stained glass designed by C. E. Kempe in 1879, a chancel ceiling by Temple Moore from around 1890, a carved Norman cross base and a communion cup made in York in 1687.
