About All Saints

All Saints is the Church of England parish church for Upper Poppleton, situated on The Green in York, North Yorkshire. Now joined with St Everilda’s in Nether Poppleton, it belongs to the York archdeaconry and diocese. The church has Grade II listed protection.

Christian worship on this spot dates from the Norman era, when a chapel served an older York parish. That structure was taken down during 1890, and C. Hodgson Fowler’s replacement opened in 1891. Constructed in stone, the building has a combined nave and chancel, a compact tower to the west and a porch facing south. The porch incorporates a Norman entrance retained from the former chapel. Inside are visible timber roof supports of alternating patterns, nineteenth-century seating and a medieval font featuring an unadorned basin above an octagonal support. George Pace later planned the passage connecting the northern vestry, completed around 1964, as well as the sanctuary furnishings installed about 1965.
