About Saint Andrew's Church

Saint Andrew's Church stands on Church Lane in Bishopthorpe, within York, North Yorkshire. It is an active Anglican parish church and belongs to the Church of England. The building was designated Grade II in 1985.

Christian worship in Bishopthorpe can be traced to the thirteenth century. A church erected in 1768 was prone to flooding, and severe floods in 1892 prompted plans for a replacement farther from the river. C. Hodgson Fowler produced the design, with building work beginning in February 1898 and consecration taking place on 25 July 1899. Constructed from sandstone beneath a tiled roof, the church follows the Gothic Revival tradition. Its plan includes an aisled nave, chancel, southern porch and northern vestry. The battlemented west tower was added in 1903, paid for by the Archbishop of York, and rises in three sections with angled buttresses. Perpendicular-style tracery appears in most of the windows.
