About St Mary's Church

St Mary’s Church is an Anglican parish church in North Yorkshire, north-east of York. It continues to serve the local parish and is protected as a Grade I listed building. Its long Christian history and unusual medieval crypt have also made it a place of pilgrimage.

A wooden monastery was founded on the site in 654, with Cedd as its first abbot. After the earlier community was destroyed, Benedictine monks established a new church in 1078. Much of the surviving nave, foundations and crypt is Norman in character. Aisles and arcades were added during the 13th century, followed by the tower in the 14th. John Loughborough Pearson restored the building in 1879, rebuilding the porch and replacing the roof. Extending beneath the entire church, the thick-walled crypt has a nave, side aisles and an apsidal chancel, supported by four pillars thought to pre-date the Norman Conquest.
