About Church of St.Mary
The Church of St.Mary is a Church of England parish church serving East Cottingwith, in the York area of North Yorkshire. It is protected as a Grade II listed building, a designation granted in 1967. Services were held on most Sundays in 2010, although the parish was then operating with an annual shortfall.
Probably finished in 1786 as the successor to an older chapel, the church is constructed from reddish-brown brick and covered by a slate roof. Its nave and chancel form a single range, ending in an angled eastern apse, while a tower stands at the west end. The tower includes arched openings for its bell chamber and is topped by a lead-covered pyramidal roof. Rounded openings and carefully formed brick arches characterise the doors and windows. Inside is a six-sided pulpit dating from the late 18th century.
