About St Helen's Church, Thorganby
St Helen’s Church, Thorganby is the Church of England parish church serving Thorganby, in York, North Yorkshire. It has been protected as a Grade I listed building since 1966.
Christian worship on the site is documented from 1228, although by 1312 it was a chapel within Aughton parish. Independent parish status returned following the Dissolution of the Monasteries. The chancel arch may originate from the middle of the 14th century, while the Magnesian limestone tower is probably 15th-century. The brick nave and south porch were rebuilt in 1710, with the chancel following in 1719. Most windows are round-headed, but the east window has Perpendicular Gothic tracery. A vestry was added on the north side in the early 1800s, and restoration took place around 1955. Interior features include an octagonal late-17th-century font, a medieval memorial slab to Alice Saltmarsh and three bells, two dated 1666 and 1738.
